on hope

Religion in general tends to offer hope to people, helping them get through life when the going gets too tough. This is why Marx aptly called it the opiate of the people. The christian version famously runs: “And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28, NET translation).

I believe this idea can be completely replaced with the secular maxim: “You can always make the best out of a given situation.”

The latter maxim even has the advantage of being more proactive than the former.
