A young monk went to his Zen master and asked: “Is there a god?” And the Zen master hit him on the head with a stick. Then he asked “Is there no god?” And the Zen master hit him again with the stick. Finally, he said to the master: “I now understand that there is a god and there is no god. I understand that god is incomprehensible.” But the master hit him once again with the stick. Finally the monk complained: “I don’t understand anything!” And the Zen master handed him the stick.
